A committee to look into the well being and security of the state’s agricultural and meals processing staff is being established by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Walz established the committee through government order on Friday, almost a 12 months after the coronavirus pandemic first made landfall in Minnesota. Final 12 months, a number of meat processing amenities within the area noticed high-profile virus outbreaks, which put a highlight on staff’ well being and security rights.

Whereas agricultural and meals processing staff “are foundational to Minnesota’s financial system,” they “face immense challenges, notably relating to office security, employment protections, and entry to protected housing, well being care, and transportation,” Walz stated in an announcement Friday.

The committee will work to reply to the COVID-19 pandemic, plan for future rising seasons, dedicate sources towards housing and transportation for staff, enhance communication between state businesses, labor teams and advocates and extra.

Two deputy commissioners from the state’s Division of Employment and Financial Growth and Division of Agriculture will co-chair the committee.

Extra state staff, union representatives and stakeholders will probably be on the 15-member committee.
